Pink Shuttle – Bano Bus: the only all-female transportation service.
Kabul, Afghanistan. Project temporarily suspended.
The Pink Shuttle, the only all-female transportation service, was born in 2019 to promote women’s emancipation and help solve the problem of the mobility of Afghan women represented by all sort of risks on the street, including harassment, bans on using bikes, motorcycles, taxis or buses with men on board, inability to get a driving license due to too high costs or to attend mixed driving schools.
During the pilot phase (May 2019-March 2020), the project trained and hired 4 professional female drivers, the only ones in the whole of Kabul. In July 2020, the first regular minivan services began. A tutor was hired in order to provide the drivers with logistical assistance and to minimize the risks connected with innovation and female entrepreneurship. The first customers have been high-school and university student as well as civil servants, who used the service for at least 2.5 months (26.000 rides in total).
The new wave of Covid-19 and the drastic worsening of security conditions, which exposed drivers and passengers to many risks, have reduced the operativity of the service and the planned transformation of the project into a start-up business run independently by Afghan women could not be implemented. Nove then devised a strategy to use the Pink Shuttle in other ways, offering another type of support to the Afghan female population. In April and May 2020, minivans provided food aid to more than 4,800 people in Kabul. Instead, the social branch of the service was inaugurated. At the request of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICR) and Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Afghanistan (WBFA), from March 2021 one of the Pink Shuttle vans is dedicated to the free transport of the athletes of the basketball team in wheelchairs.
When the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was proclaimed in September 2021, the Pink Shuttle was temporarily suspended.
